Wherefore Shakespeare?
Our Motivation, Mission & Process
Shakespeare wrote for the masses, the majority of whom were illiterate yet still flocked to the theatre to stand for two hours and 'heare a play.' He wrote during a time when the English language was developing, when there were no rules regarding sentence structure, spelling and punctuation, and when people were dependent upon speaking and listening. Shakespeare is credited with inventing as many as 1700 words (some say as many as 2,000), most of which he created simply because he didn't have a word that expressed the right sound, feeling, rhythm or tone he was looking for! Oh, to have all those freedoms today! He should be celebrated not feared!
